ReMark.

Exhibition Dates: 5th – 28th Feb, 2025

Open Wednesday to Sunday 11am – 4pm

A contemporary abstract painting group exhibition by Chester Visual Arts showcasing 4 acclaimed Northwest artists.

Terry Duffy, Julie Mayer, Julie Saul, Anne Byrne

Each of the artists share common themes and practices, but their execution is very different, making this show a broad showcase of contemporary abstract painting. Their works start with an interest and exploration of the abstract tradition, sometimes expressionist, sometimes geometric. All are challenging, but inviting; from sublime minimal abstracts, to energetic, responsive reactions to spaces, places and all share a response to the traditional materials, processes, histories and theories of modernist abstract painting. This results in gestural and confident mark-making and use of colour, deeply rooted in the mechanics, techniques and processes of abstract painting.

Byrne’s new works on display in ReMark emerged from the artist’s experience of time spent in County Kerry, Ireland in November 2024.

Created as as an initial embryonic exploration, the pieces are a response to her immediate experience of the region, the land of Ireland and it’s culturally unique, rich DNA. The paintings reference a land laden with culturally loaded sites, both natural and otherwise, of historical significance and richness that evidence the habitation by…and movement of past peoples.

The emerging works are reduced in their delivery yet feature occasional contextual references. Topographical observation sits alongside notions of Byrne’s more vital concern of the ‘liminal’ within those spaces in the wider aesthetic of a painterly approach.
