My practice is informed by a reflective process of looking and considering context to deliver authenticity.
Predominantly a landscape painter, I work in an expressionist tradition. My primary medium is oil paint but I also use mixed media to explore new territories and ways of visual communication. I am interested in capturing a tension in my work that combines the discipline of ‘careful observation’ with the use of mark-making as an expressive form. I embrace a reflective process that acknowledges context to deliver authenticity.
I am naturally drawn to raw wide, open spaces and am compelled to respond to environmental influences such as weather and light and their effect on the landscape. Expressionist, figurative traditions exert a heavy influence on my work and hold special resonance.
Expressionist, figurative traditions have been fundamental in my development as a painter and specifically the painterly qualities of the work by artists such as Walter Sickert, Stanley Spencer, Lucien Freud and Euan Uglow have played important roles. But not exclusively; the art and working practices of artists such as Norman Ackroyd - for his range from the illustrative to a leaning towards abstraction as well as the highly responsive works of painters such as Joan Eardley have also been significant influences.
